Having grown up in the wine industry as part of the family who founded Qupe, I started Ethan Wines in 2001 in Sonoma County while finishing school for enology and working under Greg LaFollette at Tandem Winery in Sebastapol. I decided to dive right into the business crafting small amounts of premium Syrah and Sangiovese, two varietals I love to drink. I loved the wine business and wanted to try my own hand at making wine.
The original vision is still the same; a focus on small lots of premium wine. Right now I produce about 1,000 cases and I'd like to grow to about 2,500 cases. The varieties I make are Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache and Grenache Blanc...basically all Rhones, with the exception of Sangiovese.
Sangio started in the beginning. It was a wine I loved, and I had access to really good fruit. I knew my dad had never made it, and I wanted to try something he'd never done. When I asked him his thoughts, he said, "Don't do it." He said it was hard to make, hard to grow and hard to sell. So like any kid, immediately contracted out the fruit. To this day, it's my most popular wine, and it's a wine my dad always wants bottles of every year.
I hope you enjoy Ethan Wines.
